COLLEGE-LEVEL GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Accessing U.S. College Education in High School

At Life Prep Academy, the High School Program (Grades 9–12) is designed with an Early College approach, allowing students to complete their high school curriculum while earning college-level general education credits. These courses are taught directly by faculty members from Wichita State University and delivered at the Life Prep Academy campus.

The University Pathway model enables students to experience college-level academics early by becoming familiar with university learning methods, academic expectations, assessment standards, and research-based learning approaches. Beyond gaining knowledge and earning college credits during high school, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, independent learning habits, and the ability to adapt to an international academic environment.

This foundation helps students build a strong academic pathway toward higher education in the United States while preparing them to pursue competitive university admissions and scholarship opportunities at leading institutions worldwide.

Depending on their academic interests and future career goals, students may explore college-level coursework in areas such as business, technology, health sciences, and engineering. Representative courses include:

  • Introduction to Business – Fundamentals of Business
  • Principles of Management – Principles of Management
  • Introduction to Programming – Fundamentals of Programming
  • Introduction to Java – Introduction to Java Programming
  • Web Development – Web Development
  • Introduction to Python – Introduction to Python Programming
  • Certified Nurse Aide – Certified Nurse Aide Training
  • Phlebotomy – Phlebotomy Techniques
  • EKG – Electrocardiography
  • Patient Care Technician – Patient Care Technician Training
  • Construction Science – Fundamentals of Construction Science

The course introduces the fundamental principles of how businesses operate in the modern economy. Students explore core areas including management, marketing, finance, accounting, human resources, and business operations, while developing an understanding of how these functions work together to create value and competitive advantage. The course also fosters an entrepreneurial mindset and strengthens students’ analytical and decision-making skills in a global business environment.

The course focuses on the four core functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling. Students explore the distinction between leadership—inspiring others and guiding team development—and management—organizing resources to achieve organizational goals. The course also develops students’ skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making within organizational settings.

This introductory computer science course helps students understand how computers process information and how programmers develop software to solve real-world problems. Topics include algorithms, variables, conditional statements, loops, functions, and fundamental programming principles. Through hands-on practice with widely used programming languages such as Python, Java, and C++, students develop logical thinking, computational problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply technology to practical challenges.

Java is one of the world’s most widely used object-oriented programming (OOP) languages, with applications across banking systems, e-commerce, Android development, and enterprise software. This course introduces students to fundamental programming concepts, including classes, objects, inheritance, and polymorphism, while providing hands-on experience developing basic programs and applications. It provides a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing computer science, information technology, or software engineering.

The course introduces the process of designing, developing, and maintaining a modern website, from user interface design to server-side data processing. Students learn foundational web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create user interfaces, while exploring the concepts of client-side and server-side programming. Through hands-on projects, students gain an understanding of how websites are designed, built, deployed, operated, and maintained in an Internet environment.

Python is one of the most widely used programming languages today, known for its straightforward syntax, accessibility for beginners, and broad range of applications. Python is widely used in artificial intelligence (AI), data science, automation, cybersecurity, and software development. This course helps students build a strong foundation in programming, strengthen analytical and problem-solving skills, and prepare for further study in emerging technology fields.

The course provides foundational knowledge and skills in healthcare and patient support. Students learn essential principles of patient care, assistance with daily activities, and the measurement of vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiratory rate. The course also develops communication, caregiving, and patient-support skills within healthcare settings. It is well suited for students interested in pursuing nursing, medicine, or health sciences.

Phlebotomy is a healthcare field focused on the collection of blood specimens for medical testing. The accuracy of many important laboratory tests depends on blood specimens being collected, handled, and stored properly. This course introduces students to venipuncture techniques, infection control procedures, vein identification, patient safety, and proper handling of laboratory specimens in accordance with professional standards.

EKG (Electrocardiogram) is a diagnostic technique that records the electrical activity of the heart to help identify abnormalities in heart rhythm and cardiovascular function. This course introduces students to the principles of electrocardiography, EKG procedures, proper electrode placement, and the recognition of basic waveform patterns. It provides a foundational skill for students interested in cardiology and healthcare.

The course develops essential patient care skills for work in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Students learn to monitor patients’ health status, assist with daily activities and mobility, perform basic patient care procedures in accordance with established protocols, and collaborate with healthcare professionals as part of the care process. The course also emphasizes professionalism, responsibility, and effective communication with patients.

The course introduces foundational concepts in the construction industry, including building materials, technical drawings, construction processes, equipment, and workplace safety standards. Students explore the basic principles of building design and construction while developing an understanding of the roles of engineering, quality management, and safety in the modern construction industry.
